    Position Overview

    SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an Accountant to join the Controller's Office of the Business Services Division (BSD). The SLAC Accounting team is responsible for ensuring accuracy, reliability, and integrity of financial information, delivering technically competent accounting & financial services to the Laboratory, Stanford University, and the Department of Energy. Reporting to the SLAC Financial Accounting Manager, you will work in a dynamic role collaborating diligently with BSD finance teams and other stakeholders to provide accurate and timely financial reporting. This role will focus primarily on moderately complex accounting activities and functions, and activities related to external & internal audit support.

    The core duties and responsibilities for this position include validating accounting data integrity, administering accurate financial reporting information by supporting accounting month/year-end close processes, assisting staff by responding to accounting-related questions, providing robust & timely support for accounting processes, and partnering with key stakeholders on collaborative projects and routine activities.

    In partnership with other finance professionals, the Accountant will support the team using their accounting knowledge and experience by identifying risks as well as process improvement opportunities in areas such as transactional processing and analysis, and financial assurance controls and testing.

    Your specific responsibilities include:

    • Perform moderately complex accounting activities and functions, including monitoring accounts, preparing documentation, expenditure reconciliations and reviews, revenue reporting/accounting, purchases and reimbursements, general ledger transactions, and journal entries.

    • Support internal & external audits by extracting, reviewing, and analyzing financial transactions and data.

    • Review, process, gather, and compile accounting transactions and documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance. Contribute to development of analyses to be used for key activities or decision making.

    • Identify and resolve incorrect journal entries, data anomalies, deviations from established procedures, and unusual issues.

    • Collect data and perform research on details of transactions. Ensure work complies with complex internal policies and external regulations which may require interpretation.

    • Run, maintain, reconcile, review, combine, analyze, and validate financial data sets, utilizing financial reports, financial databases, and key financial information often from multiple systems. Prepare management information reports.

    • Contributing to developing and maintaining desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.

    • Contribute to unit and organization strategy; assisting in the development of change management plans and materials as needed. Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.

    • Serve as a resource to local units and other departments to resolve accounting-related issues.

    • May train, coach, and review the work of other staff, as needed. Contribute primarily through applying individual expertise.

    • Other duties may also be assigned.

    To be successful in this position you will bring:

    • Associate degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and at least two years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience. (Bachelor's degree strongly preferred)

    • Competence in business applications, such as Microsoft Office; intermediate Excel skills.

    • Underlying knowledge of Accounting ERP systems, such as PeopleSoft, Oracle, SAP.

    • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with accounting systems and computer literacy.

    • Understanding of accounting concepts and ability to apply accounting skills.

    • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

    • General understanding of Cost Accounting Standards.

    • Demonstrated strong customer service & communication skills, including the ability to communicate information clearly and effectively to internal audiences and client groups.

    • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute as part of a project team.

    • Demonstrated ability to deliver results under time constraints.

    The expected pay range for this position is $74,000 - $97,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
